A typical optical smoke detector contains a light source and a light sensor, which are positioned inside the detection chamber so that, under normal conditions, the light does not strike the light sensor directly. When smoke enters the chamber, the smoke particles scatter the light, and some of it hits the photodetector. Based on this, the detector sends an alarm signal to the system.

Modern addressable smoke detectors also utilize signal processing, soiling compensation, and sensitivity control. These features are designed to ensure reliable detection even when environmental conditions vary or the detector becomes soiled over time.

The Role of a Smoke Detector in a Fire Alarm System

In a building’s automatic fire alarm system, a smoke detector is not a standalone alarm but a field device connected to the system. In an addressable system, each detector can be identified individually, allowing the fire alarm control panel to display the exact location of an alarm or fault.

This differs from a room-specific smoke detector. A smoke detector triggers a local alarm, whereas a fire alarm system can transmit the alarm signal to a fire alarm control panel, control other systems, and—depending on the location—forward the alert to a monitoring station or emergency dispatch center.

Placement and Installation

However, when placing a smoke detector, you must take into account factors such as the size of the room, ceiling structures, ventilation, beams, and other obstacles that may affect the movement of smoke.

It is generally not advisable to place a smoke detector right next to the supply air flow of a ventilation system. In addition, areas where steam, dust, or fumes are generated during normal operation may require a different type of detector or more careful planning. The right solution is chosen based on the conditions at the site.

A qualified electrical contractor will perform the physical installation and wiring. As the system supplier, PAP Group will then be responsible for the programming, commissioning, and functional testing of the fire alarm control panel in accordance with the agreed division of labor.

Maintenance and Service

A smoke detector requires regular maintenance. Over time, dust and other airborne contaminants can accumulate in the detector and affect its operation. This can result, for example, in an increase in false alarms or reduced detection sensitivity.

Detectors that are dirty or otherwise found to be unreliable are replaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s and system maintenance instructions. Smoke Detectors Compared to Other Detection Technologies

If smoke, steam, dust, or fumes are generated in a space during normal use, you may want to consider, for example, a heat detector, a multi-criteria detector, a flame detector, a heat-sensing cable, or a sampling system.

A heat detector reacts to a rise in temperature, not to smoke. A flame detector, on the other hand, detects the radiation from a flame and is suitable for certain locations where a fire can develop rapidly. A sampling system can be a good solution, for example, in locations where extremely early fire detection is required or where installing a conventional detector is challenging.

Often, the best results are achieved by combining different types of detectors. This allows each space to be protected according to its intended use and conditions.

The Fire Alarm System as a Whole

A smoke detector is one component of a fire alarm system. The fire alarm control panel receives data from the detectors, monitors the operation of the devices, and initiates programmed actions in the event of an alarm or a malfunction.

When a detector senses signs of a fire, the information is transmitted to the fire alarm control panel. The control panel can, for example, activate fire bells, the voice evacuation system, controls for smoke exhaust or fire doors, and forward the alarm in accordance with the facility’s requirements.

A modern fire alarm system also provides information that is important for maintenance. The control panel’s event log, fault alerts, and device-specific data help pinpoint problems and ensure that the system remains operational.

Responsibilities, Regulations, and Documentation

Finnish rescue legislation sets specific requirements for fire safety. The Rescue Act 379/2011 requires building owners and occupants to ensure that the building’s fire safety is maintained at an appropriate level. The requirements for fire alarm systems are determined based on the building’s intended use, regulatory requirements, plans, and applicable guidelines.

The design, installation, commissioning, inspections, and maintenance of the system must be clearly documented. Good documentation helps ensure that system modifications, maintenance, and any troubleshooting can be traced later.
