The special needs of industrial sites
Business continuity
Early detection gives staff time to intervene before a fire spreads. At Best-Hall’s production hall in Kälviä, aspirating smoke detectors responded to a fire early, and the production stoppage was limited to two days.
Permit conditions and insurance
A condition of a production plant’s building permit may be that the conveyors are protected by a fire alarm system. Insurance companies may also require the same.
Statutory inspections
When a fire alarm system or an automatic fire extinguishing system is based on a statutory provision or a permit condition, it undergoes a verification inspection before it is taken into use and a periodic inspection every three years (Act on Certain Fire Safety Equipment 191/2024). The holder is responsible for the maintenance programme and for testing the transmission link every month (Ministry of the Interior Decree 976/2024).
Solutions for demanding conditions
Conveyor protection
A linear heat detector based on optical fibre monitors the temperature along the entire length of the cable, withstands outdoor conditions and is suitable for conveyor lines several kilometres long. Explore our linear heat detection cables.
Aspirating smoke detection
An aspirating smoke detection system draws air samples through a pipe network to a detector, so it is suitable for high halls, cold stores and spaces where it is difficult to reach a detector for maintenance. See our aspirating smoke detection systems.
Flame and gas detectors
Flame detectors detect open flames quickly, and gas detectors monitor the concentration of flammable gases. In potentially explosive atmospheres, the equipment must comply with ATEX requirements. Explore our flame and gas detectors.
Voice alarm and escape lighting
In large production and logistics premises, the alarm and the escape routes have to be designed for the whole area. Read about voice alarm systems and emergency and escape lighting.
References from industry and logistics
PAP designed and implemented the fire safety solutions for the Kemi bioproduct mill. We have also built conveyor protection for the Äänekoski bioproduct mill, for energy production in the Turku region, for Kuopion Energia and for FinnSementti in Lappeenranta. At S Group’s logistics centre in Sipoo, we installed more than 400 aspirating smoke detection systems, 30 fire alarm control panels and 3,000 other devices, and we look after the site’s maintenance.

Services for the whole life cycle
In a new-build project, PAP works in the design team supporting the electrical designer, so that the system is designed, positioned, installed and commissioned correctly. Implementation is handled by TOIMI project services, and during use the systems are looked after by TURVA maintenance services. For staff, we organise safety training on topics such as hot work and hazardous substances.
Frequently asked questions
How long a conveyor line can be monitored with a linear heat detector?
Installing optical fibre is cost-effective even over long distances, for example 10 kilometres. The threshold values defined in the system can be set so that staff are informed of a rise in temperature even before a fire alarm.
Is an aspirating smoke detection system suitable for a freezer store?
Aspirating smoke detection systems are also used in cold spaces: the logistics centre in Sipoo has a freezer of almost 15,000 m². Suitability is assessed on the basis of the site’s conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can PAP maintain the systems across an entire plant site?
Yes. We compile the maintenance programme from the equipment’s maintenance instructions and maintain fire alarm systems, aspirating smoke detection systems, linear heat detectors and other fire safety systems under the same agreement.
