# The best fire safety for Seurahuone in Turku

Turku’s legendary Seurahuone, built in the 1920s, has just undergone a thorough renovation and facelift. The hotel’s fire safety systems were also renewed in this large-scale renovation.

“We have previously been involved in numerous hotel fire safety projects,” says PAP’s sales manager Juha Suonpää. “I think that is one of the reasons why we were also chosen as the equipment supplier for this project.”

In the Seurahuone project, the main responsibility for the design and implementation of the fire alarm systems lay with Saipu Oy from Turku. PAP and Saipu have worked together as partner companies on various projects for years. “Saipu knows how we work and also knows that we represent top fire safety brands. That is why we were brought into this project too, in the role of equipment supplier.”

Hotel projects come with an added challenge because of the nature of the hotel business: it is impossible to predict how hotel guests will behave. In addition, a hotel property often has other functions besides accommodation, such as conference or restaurant operations, which must be protected without interruption. For these reasons, the fire safety systems chosen for hotels must be extremely reliable and also cover situations that cannot always be anticipated.

## A large-scale equipment package

The fire safety equipment for Seurahuone was chosen from Panasonic’s range. Panasonic, which offers world-class fire safety, has more than 70 years of experience in developing fire safety solutions. Its range includes a comprehensive selection of options not only for fire alarms but also for warning of threatening situations.

“Our delivery to Seurahuone included fire alarm control panels, heat, smoke and multi-sensor detectors, manual call points, addressable sounders, control units, conventional detectors and base sounders. To make the fire alarm system easier to use, we also provided graphics software for the site that runs on PCs. With the software, the user can easily switch individual fire detectors connected to the system on or off. In the event of an alarm, the software also immediately shows exactly where in the building the alarm was activated.”

The fire safety system installed at Seurahuone provides the old hotel building with fire safety on a large scale. Heat detectors report a fire even before flames have had a chance to flare up, and smoke detectors give warning when the fire is in its smouldering stage. These detectors communicate with the fire system’s control units, which in turn automatically pass on information about the incident to the Emergency Response Centre. The manual call points installed in the hotel set off the sounders in the hotel and send an alarm to the Emergency Response Centre when a person raises the alarm by pressing the call point. Addressable detectors pinpoint the location of the fire exactly, revealing, for example, which hotel room the alarm came from. At Seurahuone, a base sounder has also been installed in every hotel room to wake the guest in the event of a fire.

### Hotels well in hand

In addition to Seurahuone in Turku, PAP has helped build fire safety for more than a hundred other hotels and accommodation establishments in Finland. “Our fire safety solutions can be found at, among others, the Clarion hotel, Scandic Marski and Hotel St. George in Helsinki and Sokos Hotel Flamingo in Vantaa. The fire safety of Sokos Hotel Torni in Tampere was also delivered by PAP Group.”

In the Seurahuone project, PAP acted as the equipment supplier, but the company also has experience of handling larger entities. “In the case of the Clarion hotel and Hotel St. George, for example, we were responsible for the design and implementation of the fire alarm, emergency lighting, exit sign and voice alarm systems. In practice, this meant that we were responsible for designing the fire safety systems, installing, integrating and commissioning the systems, and servicing and maintaining the installed systems after installation.”

### Outstanding fire safety products for different sites

In addition to the Panasonic equipment used at Seurahuone, PAP’s range also includes a wide selection of other top fire safety brands. “Our exit signs and emergency lighting come from Emex Light and our aspirating smoke detection systems from Panasonic and Kidde. Fibre-optic linear heat detection solutions come from AP Sensing and conventional linear heat detection cable solutions from Kidde. Flame detectors come from Spectrex, Panasonic and Det-Tronics.”

The guiding principle in building PAP’s product range has been to make comprehensive fire safety possible for every site. “A fire safety system has three main tasks: to detect a fire, to give warning of it and to guide people to safety in an emergency. Our range includes only the world’s top brands, each of which plays its part in ensuring that these important functions can be safeguarded at the site.”
